The Pragmatic Buddhist was first published on June 30, 2007
by CPB's Monastic Director, Jim Eubanks (Shi Yong Xiang).
Jim was formal monastic student of the late Ryugen Fisher
(Ven. Shi Shen Long), and learned from his teacher the
necessity of pragmatism in a contemporary American approach
to Buddhism.
The Pragmatic Buddhist is intended to educate and orient
the public and Buddhist practitioners in the West on the
importance of updating and revising the traditional
vocabularies of Buddhism, in order to make it more
applicable to today's contemporary issues. Specifically,
The Pragmatic Buddhist incorporates Western schools of
thought such as classical American pragmatism,
neopragmatism, naturalism, and science into its
presentation of Chan and Zen Buddhism, as these schools are
particularly meaningful to contemporary understanding in
the West.
